How to Combine Classic Quizzes in Canvas

This article concerns combining multiple Classic Quizzes together into a single quiz in Canvas.

In Canvas there is no automatic "Merge Quizzes" button. However, there are still ways, to combine multiple quizzes together into a single quiz.

How to Combine Classic Quizzes in Canvas

Part 1: Exporting Quizzes as a .QTI Zip File

Step 1: Open Canvas and navigate to the course where the quizzes to be combined are housed.

Step 2: Click Settings to navigate to the Settings page.

Step 3: On the Settings page, click "Export Course Content" in the upper right-hand menu to go to the "Content Exports" page.

Step 4: Below "Export Type," select "Quiz." You will see a list of all the quizzes in your course.
Step 5: Deselect the box next to "All Quizzes," then scroll through and check the box next to any quizzes you wish to combine. Then click "Create Export."

Step 6: You will see a loading bar while the export processes. Once it is done, refresh the page.
Step 7: On the refreshed page, you will see "QTI Export" at the top of the page under "Content Exports." Click the QTI export to download it. Note that you do not need to extract this Zip file.
Step 8: Click Settings to navigate to the Settings page.
Step 9: On the Settings page, click "Import Course Content" in the upper right-hand menu.


Part 2: Importing Quizzes as Question Banks

Step 10: Go to Quizzes and Create a new Classic Quiz.

Step 11: Under "Import Content," from the "Content Type" dropdown, select .QTI Zip File (the last option.)
Step 12: Next to "Source", click "Browse." Select the file you just downloaded.
Step 13: Click "Import." Your quizzes will be imported into your course as Question Banks.


Part 3: Combining Classic Quizzes


Step 14: Go to Quizzes and Create a Classic Quiz.
Step 15: Click the "Questions" tab.
Note: At this point in the process, you can either choose to keep the quizzes as separate sections (Question Groups) within a single quiz, or select questions out of both quizzes to mix together in a single section. To perform the latter, simply click "Find Questions" and select whichever questions you would like from all your selected Question Banks.
Step 16: Click "+ Question Group."
Step 17: Underneath the Question Group name, click "Link to a Question Bank."
Step 18: Click one of the Question Banks you want to combine. It should have the same title as the Quiz you exported. Then click "Select."
Step 19: Repeat steps 16-19 for as many quizzes as you would like to combine.
