Weekly Canvas Tip #27: Poll Your Class With Padlet!

This week's Tip will cover the new Polling feature in Padlet, including how you can easily deploy polls for in-class activities!

Why Polls?

Polls have a variety of uses in the classroom. They can be a great way to gauge understanding, provide in-class options for practice and feedback, or create a sense of community synchronously or asynchronously.

Why Use Padlet for Polling?

Padlet is a versatile tool that allows you to create an editable digital board where you and your students can post and interact over various types of content.

One of its newest features is the ability to create polls with automatic updating and easy sharing via links or QR code, making them a great in-class activity option.

How to Add a Poll to Padlet

1. Log into your Padlet account and open the specific Padlet where you'd like to add a poll.

2. Click on the + icon in the lower right-hand corner to add a Post.

3. Then click on the "..." to reveal more attachment types.

4. Choose the 'Poll' option and create your poll.

5. After setting up the poll, click the "Publish" icon to make it accessible for students.

You can also edit the poll by adding a subject, changing the question and answers, adding a caption, changing the color, or even setting a future publish date.

Additionally, you can add as many polls as you wish to a single Padlet, or stack them with other activities such as a Word Wall.

In-Class Tip: Sharing Padlet Poll via QR Code

Would you like to make it easier for students to access the poll in class? Presenting the QR code can enable an entire class to participate in a polling activity quickly.

1. To get a link to your Padlet, click the "Share" link in the right-hand menu.

2. Under the "Share" subheading, click "Get QR Code."

3. Download the QR code as a PNG.

4. Add this QR code to a PowerPoint slide or a Canvas page. Display this resource prominently on-screen during class to allow your students to open the Padlet automatically with their devices.

How to Lock Padlet / Set Privacy Settings

If you'd prefer that students only read the Padlet and not make edits, you can:

1. Under the "Share" icon, go to "Change Privacy."

2. In "Visitor permissions," set your Padlet to "Can Read," which prevents students from editing or adding posts.
