"Kaltura (My Media)" vs "Kaltura (Media Gallery)"

My Media: My Media is your personal media storage. It is different for each user because it shows media you have uploaded or created over time. The same “My Media” list is available to you from each course, and items in My Media can be published in one or more courses. Items in My Media are private to you until they are published somewhere. You can also add other users as collaborators on your media from within My Media.

Media Gallery: The Media Gallery is is tied to a specific learning management course. Everyone enrolled in that course can see what’s published to the Media Gallery. Multiple people in the course can contribute to the Media Gallery depending on the way the admin setup the course.

Adding "Kaltura (Media Gallery)" to your Canvas Course

If Kaltura Media Gallery is not already visible in your Canvas course navigation:

  1. Select the Canvas course where you want to use Kaltura.
  2. Click Settings from the course navigation menu to edit your course.
  3. Click the Navigation tab on the horizontal menu header.
  4. Click and drag Kaltura Media Gallery from the list of hidden items to a spot on the course navigation list

Organizing a Kaltura Media Gallery

Each course can only have a single Kaltura Media Gallery, but within the gallery instructors can create playlists of media to organize course materials. Playlists are a way to organize select media into groups of similar material, or curated collections of media for students to watch in one go, in a certain order.

Creating a Media Gallery Playlist

You can create playlists of media within your Media Gallery.

  1. Click Kaltura Media Gallery in the course navigation menu.
  2. In the upper right corner of the page, click the Actions button.
  3. Click the Create channel playlist button.
  4. Enter a Title, Description and Tags if you'd like.
  5. Click the Create button.
  6. Click the plus  button to add the media in your library to the playlist. If you do not see any media to add, you will need to upload media first before you can fully create a playlist. Media that has been added to the playlist will have a check mark next to it.
  7. Click the Save button.

Once you have added a playlist with media to your Media Gallery, the playlists will appear on the first tab, and all other media in the Media Gallery will appear in the second tab, as shown in the screenshot below.

Copying a Media Gallery from a previous Canvas course

Kaltura Media Galleries work in a way that is specifically tied to the course site, so when copying your content to another course site, the Media Gallery will NOT automatically copy over with the "Import Existing Content" button on your course homepage.

  1. Navigate to your new Canvas course site and click on Media Gallery in the course navigation.
  2. Click on the icon located in the top right corner of the page and click Import.
  3. Select the media gallery you want to import entries from
  4. Click Import. Please note that if you have a lot of media to import this may take a little while.

Publishing Media to Multiple Course Media Galleries

  1. Navigate to your personal media library ("My Media") from within your Canvas Course site (on the left site navigation) or from media.ithaca.edu (in the top right when you click on your name)
  2. Check the box(es) to the left of the media that you want to publish to your Canvas course site Media Galleries. If you'd like to select all of the media visible in the library, click on the uppermost check box to select all media.
    • PLEASE NOTE: This will not select your entire library, only what has loaded on the page. To access more entries, scroll down and click the "load more" button. Once all of the media you want to publish is visibly loaded on the screen, now you can click on the uppermost button to select all of the entries loaded on the page.
  3. In the top right, click the Actions drop-down and click Publish.
  4. Ensure that the Publishing Status is set to "Published"
  5. Check the box(es) of the course site(s) where you would like to publish your media.
  6. Click Save.
  7. Navigate to one of the course sites to confirm that the media was properly published to the course Media Gallery.
