Weekly Canvas Tip #2 - Preparing for the Next Semester

Tip #2 - Preparing for the next semester

While we just wrapped up mid-terms, many folks are starting to think about the Winter and/or Spring 2022 terms. Here are a few updates and reminders for instructors who may be starting to think about Canvas courses for the next semester.

When will the Winter and Spring 2022 courses appear in Canvas?

    • As announced in the IntercomLinks to an external site., students will begin registering for courses the week of Nov 1 and will continue until Nov 11.
    • Course rosters will continue to update at least once daily until the end of January 2022.  As a reminder, please do not manually add any students to your course(s) during the registration and add/drop periods.
    • By Friday, Nov 5 instructors should begin to see Winter and/or Spring 2022 courses appear in Canvas. Please look for the course(s) listed under the "Unpublished" section of the Canvas Dashboard and in the Course List. See the red highlighted boxes in the images below.

When can we start building our course in Canvas and will it have an IC Course Template or Blueprint like in Fall?

    • The Winter and Spring 2022 courses will have an updated Course Blueprint. This new blueprint was created based on student and faculty feedback, by faculty volunteers and members of the LMS Governance Committee. Our hope is this easier-to-use and leaner blueprint will result in greater adoption of the course blueprint, which, in turn, creates a more uniform experience in Canvas for students.
    • Thinking about cross-listing or combining sections? Once courses have been listed in Canvas and distributed to instructors, any faculty members who wish to combine (cross-list) sections or any UG/G courses can contact Canvas Support (through the Help menu in Canvas) and request them to be cross-listed. We recommend instructors request any courses to be cross-listed prior to publishing the course.

What about our old Sakai courses?

    • All Sakai course migrations (academic courses taught Fall 2020 - Summer 2021 and special requests) have been completed. The bulk auto-migration process was finished on October 25 and our contract with the vendor will be concluding. We are no longer accepting special requests for moving content from Sakai into Canvas through the bulk auto-migration process.
    • Sakai Migrated courses can be found in your Course List and Dashboard under the "Unpublished" sections. These courses are meant as a repository of course content and not designed for teaching. Please do not manually enroll students or use these Sakai Migrated courses for instruction.
    • Sakai will remain in read/download-only mode until January 30, 2022.  After February 1, all access will be turned off and users will need to submit a ticket to the IT Service Desk for any special requests to access Sakai.
