How To: Install Office 365 ProPlus for College-Owned Devices

Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus is a suite of productivity and collaboration applications that includes always up-to-date versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, Outlook, and Teams. Each user can install Office 365 ProPlus on multiple devices. There is a limit of up to 5 installations on computers (e.g. Windows, macOS), and 5 installations on tablets and phones (e.g. iOS, iPadOS, Android).

Checking Version

To check to see what version of Microsoft Office that you have, and if it needs to be upgraded:

On Windows 10

  1. Open any Office application, such as Word.
  2. In the top menu, click File and then click Account.
  3. Under Product Information, note the product name (e.g. Microsoft Office 365)

For macOS

  1. Open any Office application, such as Word.
  2. In the top menu, click Word and then click About Word.
  3. In the dialog box that opens, note the license type (e.g. Office 2016 for Mac)

Installation on College-Owned Devices

This Office 365 ProPlus installation process covers only college-owned devices. In addition to installing the latest iteration of Office 365, it removes the deprecated Skype for Business and replaces it with Teams, which brings people, conversations, files, and tools into one workspace application. The Office 365 ProPlus upgrade may take up to 30 minutes to complete.

Quit any open Microsoft Office applications, including OneNote and Teams before proceeding with the installation process.

Visio and Project Users: If you are using Microsoft Visio and/or Project, reach out to the Business Productivity group to ensure the version of Visio and/or Project you are running is compatible.

Windows 10

Off-Campus Users: You will need to connect to GlobalProtect VPN prior to the installation of Office 365 ProPlus off-campus.
  1. In the Windows 10 search box next to the start menu, search for and open Software Center.
  2. Click Install Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus.
  3. On the following prompt, click Install.
  4. Follow on-screen prompts to install Office 365 ProPlus.
  5. In the Software Center application, click Close.
  6. After the installation process is finished, restart the computer.
  7. Upon restart, in the Windows 10 search box next to the start menu, search for and open Office.  Office 365 ProPlus applications on the web can be accessed via office.com.
  8. If any Office applications were pinned to the taskbar prior to the upgrade, they will need to be re-pinned.

macOS

Compatibility: Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus is compatible with macOS 10.15, 10.14, and 10.13. For older versions of macOS, your Office applications will still work but you will not receive any feature or security updates.
  1. In the macOS menu bar, click Go and then click Applications.
  2. Open the Self Service application.
  3. Sign in with your Netpass username and password.
  4. Click Install Office 365 ProPlus.
  5. On the following prompt, click Install Office.
  6. Follow on-screen prompts to install Office 365 ProPlus.
  7. After the installation process finishes,  click Close.
  8. After the installation process is finished, restart the computer.
  9. Upon restart, in the macOS menu bar, click Go and then click Applications. Office 365 ProPlus applications on the web can be accessed via office.com.
  10. For the best experience, open the Word application and sign in or activate it to Office 365, if prompted.

Other Devices

Microsoft Office is supported on iOS, iPadOS, and Android devices.

Labs: IC-managed lab and classroom computers will be upgraded from Office 2016 to Office 365 ProPlus in the summer of 2020. Office 365 ProPlus includes all of the familiar Office applications, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive and Teams, which is functionally equivalent to Office 2019 and is updated regularly with new features. Learn more about the difference between Office 365 ProPlus and Office 2019 >
