Quick Guide: Windows Defender

Ithaca College IT provides an anti-virus/anti-malware program from Microsoft for all college-owned Windows and macOS computers. For Windows, the program is called either Windows Defender or System Center Endpoint Protection (SCEP). For MacOS devices Crowdstrike Falcon Protect is used. This guide describes how to scan your computer using this software to search for malicious programs.

Windows 7

  1. Open the start menu.
  2. Start typing System Center Endpoint Protection.
  3. When System Center Endpoint Protection appears under Programs, click it.
  4. Click the Update tab to make sure that the virus and spyware definitions are up to date.
  5. Click the Update Definitions button.
  6. Wait until SCEP has finished searching for and installing updates. You will know it is completed when the message Virus and Spyware Definitions: Up to Date appears.
  7. Click the Home tab.
  8. Choose the type of scan. Quick scan searches only some parts of your computer chosen by Microsoft, full scan searches every file and folder, and ­custom scan searches a folder and subfolders of your choosing. Full is generally the best choice.
  9. Click Scan Now. If you chose Custom in step 8, you can now choose a directory.
  10. Wait until the scan is finished.

 

Windows 10 versions before 1703

  1. Open the start menu.
  2. Start typing Windows Defender.
  3. When Windows Defender appears under Programs, click it.
  4. Click the Update tab to make sure that the virus and spyware definitions are up to date.
  5. Click the Update Definitions button.
  6. Wait until SCEP has finished searching for and installing updates. You will know it is completed when the message Virus and Spyware Definitions: Up to Date appears.
  7. Click the Home tab.

Windows 10 version 1703

  1. Open the start menu.
  2. Start typing Windows Defender.
  3. When Windows Defender Security Center appears under Programs, click it.
  4. Click the Virus & threat protection icon, which is the leftmost option.
  5. Click Protection Updates.
  6. Click Check for Updates.
  7. Once updates are installed, click the arrow in the top left corner of the window.
  8. You can click Quick Scan to scan part of your computer now, or Advanced Scan for more scanning types.
    1. Under “Advanced Scan”, you can select a full scan, custom scan, or Windows Defender Offline. Quick scan searches only some parts of your computer chosen by Microsoft, full scan searches every file and folder, and ­custom scan searches a folder and subfolders of your choosing. Full is generally the best choice.
  9. Wait until the scan is finished.

macOS

Crowdstrike Falcon Protect does not scan files in a manner similar to traditional Antivirus scanners, it runs a scan at the time a file or program is accessed, and while applications are running. When Crowdstrike Falcon detects a malicious application, it will automatically prevent that application from running.
