Fix Majordomo Bounce "Message too long (>40000 chars)" Error

This article describes how to prevent large Majordomo messages from bouncing with a "Message too long (>40000 chars)" alert.

Audience

Symptom

Majordomo list manager receives an email message with a subject of "BOUNCE <list name>@lists.ithaca.edu: Message too long (>40000 chars)." This is generally caused by a long message or a highly formatted message or a message with an attachment.

Resolution

Remove the size limit of all messages that are sent through the list by following these steps:

  1. Go to  MajorDomo
  2. At the top of the page, click Modify.
  3. Under Modify What?, click Configuration Options.
  4. Enter the list name and password and click GO.
  5. From the drop-down at the top of the page, choose Resend Subsystem.
  6. Look for the option maxlength (resend,digest) in the list of configuration options.
  7. Delete any numbers in that field and leave it blank.
  8. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click APPLY.
