This article reviews the integration of Top Hat with Canvas. It is different than other external tools, as it is added to a Course via the Course's navigation settings.

What is Top Hat?
Top Hat is a classroom response system, where students can submit answers to in-class questions using Apple or Android smartphones and tablets, laptops, or through text message.

In order for Top Hat to properly function in Canvas, the Top Hat tool must be added to the course navigation. Even if the tool has been added to an assignment or a module, it will not work unless the Top Hat tool is added to the Course Navigation. To add the Top Hat tool:
- Log in to canvas.ithaca.edu.
- Navigate to your course site.
- Click Settings at the bottom of your course navigation on the left.
- Click on the Navigation tab.
- Scroll down to find the hidden items.
- Click and drag the Top Hat tool up into your course navigation list.
- Scroll to the bottom and click Save.
Alert: It is likely that you will see an error message that says "Create Account or Merge Existing Account. There's an issue connecting your Top Hat account With your LMS. ... There are multiple organizations configured with this LMS. Please contact Top Hat support to resolve this issue." (See screen shot below for reference.)
It is ok to ignore this message, and proceed by clicking the Log In button. Top Hat is aware of this error message and is working to resolve the issue.
