Microsoft 365 is a suite of productivity and collaboration applications that always includes up-to-date versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, Outlook, and Teams, among many others.

OneDrive

Microsoft OneDrive is Ithaca College’s online file storage service, comparable to Dropbox, Box, and Google Drive, that allows you to upload, backup, create, view, edit, and share files. By backing up your data in the cloud, it will remain safe if your computer is lost, stolen, physically damaged, or compromised, and allows for a smooth technology renewal process.

As part of Microsoft Office 365, you receive 1 TB of storage in OneDrive for free. When using the OneDrive client it will create a folder on your hard drive that is synced to the cloud. Since any files you put in this folder will be uploaded to OneDrive, you can access them from other computers and devices.

Teams

Microsoft Teams is a desktop, mobile, and web-based communication and collaboration platform for Office 365 that brings everything together into a shared workspace where you can chat, meet, share files, and work with business applications. Teams offers group chat, online meeting and web conferencing, audio and video calling, collaboration with built-in Office 365 applications, and OneDrive access.

Teams has been widely used for committees, departments, research teams, and student groups for academic collaboration, including student research groups and courses.

SharePoint

Microsoft SharePoint is a collaborative platform that integrates with Office 365. It is primarily used to serve as an internal, secure document management and storage system, to create and manage lists, and to share internal communications and events.

If you are retiring from Ithaca College, there will be changes to your Microsoft 365 account, including OneDrive, that will take place on or shortly after your retirement date. Once you retire, the type of license assigned to your account changes from a staff or faculty license to a retiree or emeriti license. Under the retiree license, you will no longer have access to the full Microsoft 365 subscription. However, your IC email account will remain indefinitely.
